As May and I sat in Bryant Park among other idlers, we drew up a list of things to do in NYC.  We jotted down things we’ve always wanted to do as NYCers but never had the time to, which is a pity isn’t it?

Anyone can join in on the fun and we invite you to do something you want to do this summer.

THE LIST

1. Start a project (specifically New York Cares & 30 Day Challenge)

or start your own project!

2. Watch a Broadway Musical

Because it’s a must. don’t ask questions.

3. Ride a NYC tour bus

Everyone will stare at me staring at them.
It’ll be a delicious touristy moment.

4. Watch a Production by Shakespeare in the Park

After this review of Twelfth Night, I knew I had to watch any production by Shakespeare in the Park.
That someday is this summer.

5. Learn how to Cook and Bake

As Over the Hedge has taught me, “Animals eat to live, but humans live to eat”; therefore, I must learn how to cook!
Cooking that perfect meal for our special someone is our dream.

6. Go on a Picnic

Naturally this follows after #5
Here are some perfect NYC picnic spots to choose from.

7. Travel to Another State

New York City is great, we know, but why stay here all summer?
Get out and cross the NY border!

We’re thinking about going to Boston, Massachusetts.

8. Visit Central Park Zoo

Yes, I’ve watched Madagascar 1 and 2 but still have no idea where Central Park Zoo is.  I am beginning to think this is a zoo of imagination.

9. Eat at “New” Restaurants

This means trying food you’ve never tried before.

We’ve already hit:

Thailand Cafe

10. Visit the New York Botantical Garden

It’s such a lovely place.

Free all day on Wednesdays &
10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturdays.

Admission info: New York Botantical Garden

* That’s all for now.  Hope you have some fun this summer!  We’ll keep you posted.

Bella is a two-month-old Chihuahua.
We love her very much even though she makes puddles everywhere.

1. Spoken Word

02Jun09

Things PG learned in college: Spoken Word

at mount holyoke college, i’m a member of the spoken word group on campus called (AiR) asian/asian american interpretive realities.  but when people ask me what spoken word really is i get a bit… flabbergasted.  i won’t even mention how i reply, instead i found a decent explanation of what it is.

What is spoken word?

Spoken Word was basically a catch-all category to lump together anything that didn’t fit into the already well established categories of performance: Music, Theatre & Dance.  Some word performance art had been around for eons— storytelling, sound-emphasis poetry, African American toasting, reggae riddims… these forms just hadn’t received much attention and suddenly the well-educated acknowledged the exclusion, suddenly people felt politically incorrect… It’s hard to illustrate the strange, unpredictable process of assigning a new label for a new consciousness… There is no simple, singular definition for Spoken Word.

Who are your favorite spoken word artists?

i have to say, some of my favorite spoken word artists are my friends.  i see the work and passion they put in to their pieces.  but here are a few well known asian spoken word artists that i admire.

Alvin Lau

Oh Alvin Lau…

when i first listened to his Asia America, Where Have You Gone piece, i fell in love with spoken word.  not so long ago, i didn’t even know asians participated in anything other than strict academic studies.  seeing him perform that awesome piece on youtube made my toes tingle.

if you’re like me and want to read his piece while watching.

Beau Sia

beau sia!

he is hilarious.

he is talented.

he is awesome.

watch below.

if you wanna listen to more of their pieces they both have myspace pages:

I love my mac, and here are some apps I can’t live without.

Apps PG can’t live without

1. Quicksilver
I love quicksilver because I can do just about everything with it.
Want to… open firefox? look up a word? open a file? open a picture? rate a song? open a link? add an event to ical? e-mail someone?
Really, quicksilver is what makes my mac awesome.
The best part is I can personalize all commands.

2. Growl & Omnigrowl
Sometimes, I think growl and omnigrowl make me the most and least productive person in the world.
They let me know everything that’s going on, what song is playing next, who just twittered, the weather, updates on my netnewswire… On top of my game, yes.  Distracted, yes.  It’s deliciously paradoxical.

3. Netnewswire
I was a devoted Google Reader person until about a month ago.  I made the switch because I didn’t want to spend the extra seconds opening firefox and clicking on the Google Reader bookmark.

4. Google notifier
Sure I can get the same thing with growl, but e-mails have a special place in my heart so I have google notifier.  The purr it makes when I get a new e-mail makes me… happy.

5. Sidenote
Better than stickies.  I can easily copy and paste things here.
You can set it up so it only shows up with a personalized hotkey.

6. Skype
Free & awesome.

7. Senuti
The reason why  have 5000+ songs on my itunes.
My friends have good music on their ipods, and now I have them too.

8. iMote
I use imote to rate my songs (you can use quicksilver too), go to next/previous song, pause with simple hotkeys.

9. Caffeine
I love this.  I hate how macs fall asleep when I’m watching a show online… so I keep it awake with a jolt of Caffeine.

10. Appcleaner
I love apps… but sometimes I don’t make the best downloading decisions.  If you go overboard like me, completely delete your unwanted apps with free Appcleaner

Some extra apps

1. Schoolhouse
iCal for school + some extra features like calculating gpa, taking notes, etc.

2. xPad
All the files right there

3. Tofu
I hate scrolling to read long pdf files or articles.  It gives me headaches so I use tofu.
I do wonder about the name though, why tofu?

4. Think
Helps you think by blocking all those other tempting apps out while you’re working.

5. Twitterific
Terrific app for twitter… heh

6. Poladroid
Love Polaroid pictures but don’t have a Polaroid camera?

7. Weathersnitch
Weather updates yay

8. Genius
I can’t believe this app is free.  It helped me study Korean but you can use it to study for anything.

9. Quinn
Too much studying?  Play some Tetris.

10. iStat menus
I just use it for the calendar it shows on the menubar but it has other aweomse features too.

11. Breakaway
Clumsy me I somehow disconnect the jack for my headphones or stereo too often, this pauses the music when that happens and continues when you plug it back in.

*12. Stumbleupon
Stumbleupon is not a mac app but a firefox add on.
Still, I had to add it because it is an essential part of my life.
Let me know if you stumbledupon this page (;

?

Have any apps you can’t live without?
David
suggested Skitch and it’s great.  Thanks for the tip.

graffiti

I found this cartoon even before I started blogging, and it turns out it is by another wordpress blogger the rut.
We all know that what makes this cartoon is the use of “motherfucker”.  Granted, I think it could do very well without the profane language because legibility and correct punctuation is totally bad ass but just in case you don’t think so, let’s add the motherfucker in there just to tell you I am, motherfucker.

I can’t help but love this cartoon because ironically enough I am that stiff grammar loving literature worshiper while my younger sister is this young hipster graffiti artist.

So who’s the winner here, the old guy or the young guy?

Eh, who cares.  They’re both vandalizing.
Arrest them officer!
